Ingredients (approx.16 tortillas, you can modify the recipe if needed):

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil or melted lard
  • 1 cup warm water

Directions:

  1. Combine flour, salt and baking powder in a large bowl and mix until the ingredients are well combined.
  2. Gradually add the vegetable oil (or melted lard) and warm water to the dry ingredients. Mix with a fork until the dough starts to come together.
  3. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 2-3 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  4. Divide the dough into golf-ball-sized portions and roll them into balls.
  5. Cover the dough balls with a damp cloth and let them rest for about 15-20 minutes.
  6. Roll out each dough ball into a thin round tortilla using a rolling pin.
  7. Heat a dry skillet or griddle over medium heat.
  8. Place a rolled-out tortilla on the heated skillet and cook for about 30 seconds to 1 minute on each side, or until it puffs up slightly and has browned spots.
  9. Repeat the process with the remaining dough balls.
  10. Keep the cooked tortillas warm by wrapping them in a clean kitchen towel as you cook the rest.

When it comes to storage, flexibility is key. Room temperature storage is perfect for short-term use, while refrigeration extends their freshness. Room Temperature: To store tortillas at room temperature, stack them with pieces of parchment paper or wax paper in between to prevent sticking. Place the stack in a resealable plastic bag or an airtight container. Use within 2 to 3 days.

Refrigeration: For longer storage, put your tortillas in a resealable plastic bag or airtight container and store in the refrigerator. They can last for up to a week.

Freezing: To freeze tortillas, stack them with parchment paper or wax paper between each tortilla. Place the stack in a resealable freezer bag and remove excess air. They can be frozen for up to 3 months. To use frozen tortillas, thaw them in the refrigerator or at room temperature.
